Werkproces: Geborduurd embleem // Work process: Embroidered patch

It’s been a while since I posted a ‘workflow’ post on this blog, so I think it’s high time for another peek into the process that is behind the things I make. Today I’m going to take you on the ‘creative journey’ of designing my Frenchie Fries embroidered patch!

Just like every process, designing my embroidered patches starts with an idea and a sketch. Since this idea had been wandering around my head for ages, I had a pretty good idea of what the illustration was supposed to look like. So the sketching wasn’t that big of a deal anymore.

After the sketch is done, I make draw the final illustration by hand using a fineliner. Then I scan the image into the computer and I ‘clean up the lines’ a bit. Below you see the original hand-drawn illustration on the left and the ‘cleaned-up’ version on the right.

Then it’s time to decide the colour palette of the patch. I wanted this patch to have the ‘fifties American diner’ ambiance, so I decided to use pink, mint-green and red as the main colours. And yellow for the fries of course.

After choosing the colour palette, it’s time to give the illustration I made some colour. After playing around with different colours I choose the definitive design, which will be sent to the embroidery studio for sampling.

When that sample comes in, it’s time to have a good look at how the colours and lines turned out. I was mostly satisfied about this sample, except for the fact that there is not much difference between the two shades of yellow used in the fries. I sent my feedback to the embroidery studio and then the production of the full order was set into motion.

And then the full order of patches comes in the mail. This is such a fun moment of the whole process!

The patches may be done, but there’s still packaging to be made. I design the packaging on the computer, print it out and cut it by hand.

Then I pack every single patch by hand.

Bijna klaar!
Almost done! But since the patch is to be sold in my Etsy shop, I have to take product photos in order to do so. I like styling my products instead of photographing them ‘all by themselves’, So I decided to throw some real french fries in the mix for this photo. After taking the photos, I do some editing in Photoshop and then the patch is ready to be listed in the shop!

And there you have it! That’s how my embroidered patches come to be. If you have fallen for this Frenchie just like I have, you can purchase the patch here. Did you like seeing the process? Let me know in the comments!
