Jongens!

Gaan we!

You guys! I know it’s been a little while but I really want to thank you for all the wonderful reactions to and participations in the #tcennujij instagram challenge. It was SO fun to see all of your photos and creativity! Olga told me a lot of you would like a second challenge in the future, zo maybe we should just go ahead and do so in a little while. In case you haven’t had enough of photographing illustrations yet, I’ll be hosting a mini course in 3D illustration at the lovely Elle Aime in Rotterdam. More info on that here.

Hosting workshops, setting up instagram challenges and making illustrations are things I can do all year round. But I’ve also got ‘seasonal proceedings’: selling my items on several markets! Last week, market season was kicked off with the Swan Market in my hometown Tilburg and now the season is in full swing for me. Which means I’ll be travelling all across the country (and maybe even outside of it) with all of my items every once in a few weeks.
With arranging a market stall comes more than meets the eye. As I can imagine, many of you might be having a market stall somewhere this season (King’s day, anyone…?). Whether you have a stall at a local flea market or at a fancy designer’s market, the basics of furnishing a market stall are the same at any kind of market if you ask me. In this post I’ll give you some tips on how to furnish a market stall with an added bonus of a free printable checklist (at the bottom of this post) so that you’ll be well prepared for your first (or next) market.
Ready? Here we go!

Investigate the circumstances.
Before you decide to rent a market stall anywhere, take the time to look into what will be sold at the market you have in mind. I have once rented a stall at a flea market, where people came to purchase ‘a lot for a little’. Seeing as my items are more expensive than 50 cents a piece (which appeared to be what everyone was looking for) I didn’t have the best day at that particular market. So be sure you know where you’re about to rent!
Sometimes when you’re subscribing to rent a stall, you can choose between an inside-stall and an outside-stall. Think what would be best for your products; being inside or outside. Will you be selling lots of paperwork like stationery and cards? Then please keep the weather in mind and be aware of the fact that paper can warp in humid weather conditions. In case you did rent an outside-stall and the weather is bad, make sure to display just one item of each and give your customer a new, fresh (and dry!) copy of the item they desire by keeping the rest of your stock in boxes under your stall. That way, you can keep your customers happy and you don’t have to throw away half your stock at the end of the day because it got wet.

Try this at home.
A lot of people consider this step as a ‘hassle’ but I can really recommend doing it anyway! Once you’ve decided to rent a stall somewhere, make a test setting at home. Once you know how big the stall you’ll be renting is, create a space as big on your kitchen table (the floor will suffice too) and just try and see how many items will fit on the surface. Trying to build your stall at home allows you to have as much trial and error as needed in order to create the perfect set up of your stall. By trying it at home you prevent yourself from struggling with things once you’re actually at the market place AND it prevents you from bringing loads of stuff you don’t have room for in your stall anyway. Win-win situation!

Less is more.

Less is more.
In my humble opinion at least. And yes; same goes for flea markets! I like looking at a nicely decorated stall with not that many items way better than seeing a completely unorganized stall with way too many items in it. Items that are presented nicely look like they’re worth the money they will be sold for. Items that are laid out randomly look like they would be better off as trash and nobody will want to buy them. So think well about how your products could be presented to look their best (and try that at home too!).

The sky is the limit.
When you rent a stall, you don’t just rent a surface. You rent a space. Which means you can use every inch of space inside the stall. Work with racks and boxes. Stacking is the magic word. That way, you can display way more items without it looking messy. You can also use the frame of the stall to hang items from, just make sure you don’t hang them in the line of sight because that makes it pretty hard to communicate with customers (believe me: been there, done that).

Cover it up.

Cover it up.
Whoever goes to a market brings a lot of junk. Fact. A lot of this junk (like packaging) needs a place to stay throughout the day. You can decide to put it all back in the car but I can tell you that is everything but convenient. It’s better to keep it somewhere in or around your stall in case you need it. If you make sure your tablecloth is big enough to cover the bottom of the stall, you can put all your junk underneath your stall without anyone noticing it. Extra tip: If you decide to purchase two smaller tablecloths rather than one very large one, you will always have a smaller tablecloth on hand when you’re renting a smaller stall.

Show it off.
Show off.

Show it off.
Your stall is your business card. It is for me, at least. It represents me, my work and my business. Show off. Really, it’s allowed! Make sure that visiting your stall is an experience. I always want people to feel like they’re in a candystore, surrounded by all kinds of things they would want to have. Make sure you have plenty of pretty bowls/baskets to present your items in, decorate your stall in a way that suits you and your products and make it an adventure! And don’t forget to have free flyers in your stall so people can take a piece of information about you and your work with them.

Bring a buddy.
My experience with markets is: don’t go alone. It’s incovenient and boring to say the least. Wherever I go with my items, someone always comes with me. That could be my boyfriend, bestie or one of my parents. Helping hands are very convenient for decorating your stall and getting coffee, but also for keeping an eye on your items and money whenever you have to go to the bathroom. Market-days are super fun but also super exhausting. It’s very nice to be able to share this experience (and the exhaustion) with someone.

No problemo!

Bonus: Use a checklist!
Not a packing-session goes by in which I don’t use a checklist. Although I have packed for markets numerous times, I’m always afraid to be forgetting something (controlefreak, anyone?). Which is why I’ll be finishing this post with offering a free printable market-stall checklist (in Dutch, sorry guys!). I tried to keep it as general as possible (‘one list fits all’), but I also left plenty of room for you to fill in things I might have forgotten.
