Geboortekaartje voor Bram // Birth announcement for Bram

1

These past months I have been VERY busy making a birth announcement for little Bram. I think it’s fair to say that this was literally one of the biggest projects I have ever done in my career so far. I’ll post a ‘making of’ article later this week (trust me, you do not want to miss that). And the best part of this all? Bram happens to be my grandnephew!
My niece decided that the fact that I’d be making the birth announcement had to remain a secret throughout her pregnancy (in some cases, keeping secrets is a good thing!), so I think we’ve surprised quite a few of our family members once the birth announcement fell into their mailboxes. It was SO much fun to work on!

The things that make this birth announcement extra special is that it is full of objects that have real sentimental value for the new parents. The cradle that is pictured where all of my illustrations are located around is the cradle that Bram actually sleeps in now that he’s born. The blanket in the cradle is knitted by Bram’s grandmother (my aunt) and the crocheted puppet you see all the way in the front of the parade is made by Bram’s great-grandmother.

Poolparty confettikaart // Poolparty Confetti-postcard

1

I’ve added a new member to the postcard-family: A party in an envelope!
This little fellow is a folded postcard which comes with an envelope AND handmade confetti (yes, I make my confetti by hand. More on that here)!
When folded, it measures 10,5 cm by 14,8 cm (4,1 inch by 5,8 inch). It is printed on a slightly metallic cardboard, which gives this card some extra sparkle and it is nicely packed in a plastic wrapper to prevent stains and scratches.
The confetti that comes with your card may vary from the confetti in the picture. It depends on which paper I have on hand.
This postcard is for sale in my Etsy shop.

Gastblog voor Applepiepieces #2: Mijn favoriet // Guestblog for Applepiepieces #2: My favorite

1

Rum? Parels? Juwelen? Tropische apen? You name it!

It’s time for the second guest-blog for Applepiepieces!
This week I will be telling about (and showing you) my favorite Applepiepieces-item from the summercollection: the Treasure Island earrings.
It’s all in the name: I’m envisioning a deserted island with Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp, anyone?) kneeling beside a treasure chest full of… Rum? Pearls? Jewels? Tropical monkeys? You name it! I don’t know about you, but at the sight of these earrings, I long for white beaches, blue oceans and the sound of waves.

It was love at first sight between me and my treasure Islands. I’m not the kind of gal to wear big statement pieces, but hey; I’m a woman and sometimes I like to show that off. These earrings are subtle with a ‘pop of glam’ and , if I may say so, very right for the more subtle jewelry type.

Applepiepieces feelgood_post
Well, guess what?

In my Inspiration Monday post this week, I let slip that something special was going to happen this thursday. Well, guess what? This wednesday brings us a little bit of thursday (which means I get to break the news a day earlier than planned)! And today I can proudly announce that I will be guest-blogging for the lovely Dutch jewelry-brand ‘Applepiepieces’, that is founded and run solely by The Wonderful Mariko. In april I will write a blog post every week on things that inspire me about the brand and I will totally get you ready for summer.

Without further ado, here’s #1 of my blog-post series, called ‘Applepiepieces Feelgood’.
You can read this post on the Applepiepieces blog as well (in Dutch).

Applepiepieces Feelgood
Enjoy!

In these coming weeks, I will (hopefully) provide you with the necessary inspiration concerning the upcomig Applepiepieces summer-collection. I want to warm you up for long hot summernights, drinking cocktails on the beach, with your toes in the surf, eating donuts at the poolside, playing boardgames, have neverending talks with your loved ones and traveling to your ‘happy place’. I will kick-off this pre-summer month with an inspirational collage about the real ‘ApplePiePieces feelgood-feel’. Enjoy!

‘Stichting Onterfd Goed’: A day at work with John

1

Last week I decided to join John for a day at his job. Not in the least to just get out of the house more (I should REALLY do that more often), but the place where he works is a very inspiring one which I wanted to blog about and so I went with him to an old factory in ‘Den Bosch’, where his workplace is at. It’s called ‘Stichting Onterfd Goed’ (I’ll explain what this means later in this post).

2

3

4

So first, something about this foundation John works for. It’s a foundation that is committed to finding a new home for ‘lost’ museum collections. Those collections come from museums that either went bankrupt or had to make way for new collections that were going to be displayed. Eitherway; something has to happen with the current collection. This is where the foundation steps in, in order to find a new destination for this collection.
Once they’ve found a new collection to reinstate, they make sure they replace pieces that are social or cultural heritage into other museums. Then they will give collectors the opportunity to purchase the more valuable pieces and once that is done, (and here comes the best part if you ask me), the collection is given back to the public to ‘adopt’. Yes, you heard me right; ‘Normal civilians’ like you and me are able to adopt an ex-museumpiece. Ain’t that awesome?!

7

8

9

I’ve been to the ‘adoption-desk’ a few times now, and I simple CAN’T leave without adopting anything. I am since then the proud owner of two vintage typewriters (one has a ‘job’ as news-letter subscriber whenever I attend a market) and a writing set including a fountain pen and a vintage letter opener. These items come from a collection that used to be on display at the ‘Scryption museum’ in my hometown Tilburg. That collection consists of everything that has to do woth writing; vintage typeriters, LOADS of fountain pens and inkwells and old computers for example.

14

15

12

The collections the foundation is currently managing is what’s left of te Scryption museum, a collection by ‘Sikkens’ which is a large Dutch company that makes painter’s supplies (think: pigments, brushes, vintage ladders and even gold leaf)  and part of the collection of an art library of the Dutch city Utrecht.

Column: Over netwerkbijeenkomsten // Recap: On network meetings

Treasury Thursday wk 45_FB

Lift it is!

Apart from being an illustrator, I also really enjoy writing (which you might have noticed since I like keeping this blog up to date). In daily life, I often get confronted with things that make me think ‘I should be writing about that’. Not in a ‘report’ kind of way, but more like a column. So with that and an experience I had this month that I just HAVE to share with you guys in mind, I decided to start a monthly recap on this blog, in which I will tell you about a certain experience I had that month. More reading, less looking a pictures. Sounds good? Good!

Let’s start with a recap of march, which is all about network meetings. There is nothing I hate more than network meetings. Now don’t get me wrong, they may work for some people, but for me they just don’t. This might have something to do with the fact that I’m absolutely and utterly socially awkward. Especially around loads of people that I don’t know. I don’t like talking about myself or my work and I don’t like slapping business cards into people’s faces. Ugh.

This month’s network meeting, however, was unavoidable because one of my clients was nominated for an entrepreneur’s award and he invited me to come. I never considered not going. I did get, however, the occasional sleepless night over my social awkwardness and the disasters this characteristic comes with.
But hey, these kind of events are supposed to be good for my self-confidence (yeah, right!) and for expanding my network (uuuhh…), so when the evening was there, I went.

Now, I just HAVE to walk you through my inner dialogue when arriving at the venue, here we go (it’s a lot to take in, I get that, my apologies in advance): ‘Okay, so I’m here, now where the hell do I go? Oh, the ‘Rembrandt-room’, okay where do I find that? Oh, it appears to be on the fifth floor. Do I really have to take the elevator, because elevators really freak me out. Wait I already AM freaking out. But since I can’t make an appearance on the fifth floor being al sweaty because I took the stairs five floors up, I guess I’ll go with the elevator anyway. Elevator it is! This elevator is seriously the slowest elevator I’ve ever been in. I hope it gets stuck because that would give me a great excuse not to go to this meeting.  No, getting stuck might be even more terrifying than attending this meeting. Oh look, I’m here. Okay, where do I hang my coat? Oh, there’s a coat-hanger right there. It looks kind of rickety, what if I hang my coat and the whole coat-hanger-thing collapses? Maybe I should keep my coat on. No, it’s way too hot in here for that, I’ll take it off. I’ll use my chair as a coat hanger. Let’s have a look at who’s here’.

That was just to illustrate what I am thinking during an event like this (and this was only the first ten minutes!). I’ll spare you the details of the rest of my inner dialogue that night, but let me just say I’m Tilburg’s ‘Bridget Jones’ when it comes to talking to strangers and inner dialogue. However, after sitting in a chair being awkward for half an hour I finally found someone I could talk to.
– F.Y.I.: This event was hosted by an entrepreneur’s society (whose name I will not mention here), which (until I knew what the abbreviation the name consists of meant) I thought to be a student association. Whoops. –
In an attempt to break the ice with my new ‘bud’ I told him that I had never heard of the entrepreneur’s society before in my life and that I thought that it was the fraternity I assumed it to be and pretending to find this very funny. My new friend asked me if I was an entrepreneur and so I told him (very briefly, though, since I don’t like talking about myself) what I do for a living. After this I returned the question to which he answered that he used to be an entrepreneur but that he was now the treasurer of the society that hosted this event. Oh. Yeah. Sure. Awesome. That is just great!

And while I was looking for a hole in the ground into which I could disappear unnoticed, I  solemnly swore to myself:
No more of these events. Ever.

P.S: The coat hanger actually DID collapse during the evening, HA!

Marktseizoen komt eraan! // Coming up: Market-season

Treasury Thursday wk 45_FB

– 1 juni: Swan Market, Grote Markt Antwerpen, Antwerpen (België).

So, the past few weeks I’ve been busy getting ready for the upcoming market season. This includes making new clutches, developing new products (which makes markets always extra exciting for me, because they are an excellent opportunity to get quick feedback on new things I’ve tried out) and doing some promotional work, which this blogpost is part of.

Upcoming season, I will have a stall at the following markets:
– April 13th: Mercado de Belcrum, ‘Electron Breda‘, Breda (The Netherlands).
– June 1st: Swan Market, ‘Grote Markt’ Antwerp, Antwerp (Belgium).
These are the markets that are booked for now, I’ll keep you updated if I will be attending more!

Nieuwe visitekaartjes // New business cards

1

A while ago it occurred to me that I have never shared images of my business cards before. Not that that’s a huge deal or anything, but since they’re actually pretty special, I thought it would be nice to share the new lot I received in the mail last week.

What exactly is special about my business cards? Well, as someone who makes loads of illustrations, I find it really hard to pick just one image for the back of the card that represents best who I am as an illustrator (after all, a business card is the thing that sticks after you’ve met someone and the first impression had better be good!).

After all; I make art prints, postcards, clutches, scarves, stickers,  party favors and temporary tattoos. These things are all so darn different that having to pick a favorite would be VERY difficult.

Luckily my printer (moo.com), gives me the opportunity to choose up to 50 different images per batch for the backsides of my business cards. No more headaches and difficult choices! Yay! So now I have 10 different business cards on hand everywhere I go. Let’s see what they look like, shall we.

Een glimp van mijn nieuwe website // New website sneak-peek

About

As I told you earlier this year, the make-over of my website is one of my biggest priorities right now. Ever since I started this website back in 2009 (back then, it was more of a portfolio site than a blog), a lot has changed. I can say I’m pretty much a different person now than I was when I first started designing. Not to mention my work and style have changed; I’ve slowly evolved from graphic designer to illustrator/product designer. My opinion has changed when it comes to aesthetics, not to mention how much my view on life, design and other pretty things differs from how everything was five years ago.

Long story short: everything has changed. Except for my website. So be prepared for a big change that’s coming up soon. Today, I’d like to share some images with you that will have a prominent place in the new website:
