Homemade market op 9 juni // Homemade market on June 9th

Besides attending the Swan Market in Antwerp (Belgium) on June 1st, I will also have a stand at the Homemade Market in Breda (The Netherlands) on June 9th. This market will take place in a church in the city centre of Breda. It’s a very special accomodation; I’ve had an exhibition there once with my art school. So if you’re free on June 9th (which is likely, since it’s Pentecost), be sure to stop by between 12 and 5 p.m.!

Alpaca baby shower

1

A few weeks ago a baby alpaca was born at a petting zoo in Tilburg! When I found out that there was going to be an official baby shower, I decided I definitely wanted to contribute.
So I can now tell you that I will be hosting a workshop in making alpaca masks at petting zoo “‘t Valleike” in Tilburg, The Netherlands. But the baby shower will include many more activities for children as well as adults, such as a name contest for the baby alpaca, felting workshops (with alpaca wool of course) and much more.
And the best part of it all is that the baby shower will take place on my birthday! So if you’re free on May 31st, be sure to stop by the petting zoo between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Spiksplinternieuw // Bright, shiny and new

Treasury Thursday wk 45_FBJongens! Mijn bright, shiny and new website!

You guys! After months of hard work I can finally say: It’s here! My bright, shiny and new website! I am so freaking happy with it! And a LOT has changed compared to the previous one. So without further ado, I will take you through the changes:

In order to keep my homepage a little more organized, I now present only a small piece of an article on the homepage. The rest of it can be read by clicking through on the ‘read more’ button. (not a very new feature in general, but it is very new for me)

Opmerkingen!

Comments!
The blog-section of my website is open to comments from now on. I’d love to get your feedback on my blog articles!

‘Share buttons’

Share buttons
At the bottom of each blog article, you now find ‘social share buttons’! This makes it a lot easier to share articles from my website on social media.

Zijbalk

Sidebar
Yes, I found good use for my sidebar (finally). Apart from the menu, you’ll find an Etsy mini and an instagram feed over there, as well as buttons that will take you to my social media pages.

Shop

Shop
My former online shop has retired. It was a very high-maintenance system for me and it took a lot of time to keep track on stock. Also, the payment method wasn’t as client-friendly as I would want, so I decided to completely delete the shop as it was (for now). Instead, you now find an ‘Etsy mini’ in the shop section, which displays some of the items that are available in my Etsy shop. Once you click one of the items, you will be redirected to my Etsy shop to make a purchase. On another note: I made my Etsy shop ‘credit card-proof’ so now you can place orders and make a payment without using Paypal.

Shop

(jippie, comments!).

Speaking of my shop; to celebrate the fact that my new website is finally online, I offer a 10% discount on all items in my Etsy shop for as long as a week. Just enter code ‘NEWWEBSITE’ at checkout. Yay!
Oh, and please do let me know in the comments (yay, comments!) what you think of the new look!

Caketoppers!

1_blog nieuw

I told you ages ago that I was planning on getting into the ‘party scene’ with my work. Not the ‘let’s-drink-until-we-pass-out’ kind of parties, but the pretty styled civilized parties. Well, today I can finally say I have started going down that path in my career. A little later than planned, but loads of projects came in the way, so that really is a luxury problem. Nevertheless I present to you today my first set(s) of caketoppers! They are now available in my Etsy shop. Yay. Happy weekend!

Ik doe het op mijn manier // I do it my way

Illustraties

Nooit geweest.

A few weeks ago, I showed you how I made Bram’s birth announcement. This was quite the adventure but oh, it was so worth it! After all the lovely comments I got on this ‘making of’ (online as well as offline) I decided to write a little more about how I work. Because Bram’s birth announcement is no exception to the rule; all of my 3D work is made this way.

It’s often like this: Whenever I’m at parties, family gatherings or network meetings (more about these next week) people talk about my work and say I’m such an amazing image editor (or Photoshopper if you will), for my ‘Photoshopped illustrations’ look so darn realistic. Yeah, uuuhm, thanks for the compliment but that’s not how I work at all. Therefore, I decided to tell you a little more about how I work today, to clear the air of this little misunderstanding about my illustrations once and for all.

First things first; ever since I can remember, I’m a total disaster when it comes to lighting, shadows and perspective. So, drawing realistically is not my cup of tea. At all. And it never will be. Not in this lifetime. So, partly because of my lack of realism (illustration-wise) and because I would simply hate a life in which I would be stuck behind my computer all the time, I decided to simply ‘stage’ every single one of my illustrations and then photograph it. In that way, lighting, shadows and perspective will come naturally and I don’t have to worry about where to add shadows and highlights or how to digitally transform my illustrations into a certain perspective. Of course I Photoshop little things afterwards, like color and contrast, but every 3D-illustration of mine you see is a little ‘set’ built in my tiny kitchen (which I transform into a tiny photo studio on a regular basis) or somewhere on location (for example Bram’s birth announcement; which was shot at Bram’s parents’ home). All my illustrations are paper cut-outs, which travel with me to whatever location I have in mind (this summer, to Tuscany for example, where I shot an art print). On this location (or in my tiny kitchen) I build sets using backdrops, a reflective screen, props and, of course, my paper illustrations.

So this is how I do it. And I do it my way. And working like this comes with carrying lots of equipment around (not to mention a huge collection of tape) and positioning myself in LOTS of uncharming ways in order to get that one perfect shot.

So, above I have shown you some (yes, there are many more!) of my paper cut-outs, below I will share some ‘at work’ shots (be warned though; many of those aren’t ‘pretty shots’). So next time you see me, don’t you dare tell me I’m such a fab image editor ;).

Column: Over dingen die je meestal niet ziet // Recap: On things you usually don’t see

0

Oh en begrijp me niet verkeerd: I’m guilty as charged.

I’d like to consider myself a part of the ‘picture perfect generation’. I grew up in times in which using the internet became more and more ‘normal’ and now that everything in my life seems to depend on it so much (social media and my blog are very important in order to ‘get myself out there’ as an artist) I sometimes feel like I’m it’s victim. I know about a zillion blog-posts have been written on this subject. Just not by me. So here goes nothin’:

Putting things about me, my career and my life on the internet is something I think is unavoidable for people (artists in particular) who want to show their work and themselves (which are often one and the same) to the world. That said, I think we’ve gone a little nuts sometimes in thinking how everything should look. Our lives ought to look happy, pretty and perfect to the outside world. Our living rooms should like they came walking straight out of a magazine and we should all speak in quotes we can put in a frame and hang on the wall. And although I think it’s best to limit you social media updates to positive ones (no one likes endless complaints and rants for the world to read), I think sometimes we just go a little too far. Oh and don’t get me wrong: I’m guilty as charged. With every picture I take, no matter what the subject, I think: is this pretty enough to put online? Because my selfesteem is not my best feature, I often think the answer is ‘no’. Which results in me not updating my social media as much as I would want or as much as I ought to.
This is the point where I’ve had it.

Life is more than just an instagram filter. That said, I’d like to share some ‘behind the scenes’ pictures with you from the photoshoot I did for my guest-blog for Applepiepieces (this guest-blogging thing was absolutely amazing and Mariko is such a doll!). Because the ‘pretty pictures’ you saw in that blog post are just the tip of the iceberg. There’s more. A lot more. And especially a lot more crap. Because a lot went wrong during the shoot. Pictures not being focused in the right place, balloons moving uncontrolably in the wind, the sun reflecting on the white sand which made me frown hiddeously, the ‘pink’ balloon being actually red because all the pink ones had sold out. You name trouble and we had it!  But you know what; I’m putting it out (t)here! Because not everything I do is picture perfect. And everyone can know. Because I’m only human. I’m not perfect and I’m proud of it.

But I could not resist a teeny tiny bit of Photoshopping on these images 😉

Gastblog voor Applepiepieces #4: Het leven is een reis // Guestblog for Applepiepieces #4: Life’s a journey

Applepiepieces_2

I can’t believe this is already the last guestblog I will be writing for Applepiepieces. This does not only mean that april has flown by, it also means that we are one month closer to summer (Yay!).

And this week, I will be treating you to a whole different kinda somethin’. Because besides the fact that I love to blog about my life and where I get my inspiration from, I’m first and foremost an illustrator. And with being an illustrator comes making illustrations. That’s why I want to close this blog-series with an illustration about Applepiepieces. It is an illustration with a ‘traveling’ theme. Not in the least because summer (and it’s tropical destinations) is upon us, but especially because ‘traveling’ is what Applepiepieces is all about if you ask me; getting to know new cultures (which Mariko can translate to jewelry so very well), the journey called ‘life’ and (to sound even more spiritual than I already did just now); the journey to your inner ‘happy place’.

‘The making of’ Brams geboortekaartje // The making of Bram’s birth announcement

0

Remember when last tuesday, I showed you the birth announcement I made for Bram and that I told you it was probably the biggest project I’ve worked on so far? Well, today I will show you why.

First, I’ll tell you a little something about what my work-process looks like. I know a lot of people think my work consists solely of Photoshop work. That I photograph a little scene somewhere and that I add my illustrations digitally later on. Well, not quite. My illustrations are real paper puppets, staged in/on/around real vintage objects and photographed in a real setting. No Photoshop involved there.
So, the illustrations I usually make are with small objects; a salt and pepper shaker, a vase or a glitter deer-head. It can be anything, really, but the objects are usually quite small and so are the paper illustrations I make to go along with them.

My cousin (for whom I designed the birth announcement), however, had a whole different sort of object in mind for me to work with. A real life-size cradle. Awesome! But this meant I had to make large paper puppets (40 cm. high or larger) in order for them to fit with the cradle size-wise. Working with illustrations this big was a whole new thing for me. I had to draw, color, print, glue and cut them on a large scale.

1_1

1_2

1_3

Then came photographing. I usually shoot every illustration in my tiny kitchen. But like I said: it’s tiny. Not nearly large enough to fit a cradle AND a 3.5 meter parade. So I had to improvise and I ended up photographing the whole setting in my cousin’s living room. But although their living room is rather large, it was nog big enough to fit the whole scene in one photo (luckily, I didn’t expect it to, so no surprises there) so I photographed it in four separate parts and then I digitally ‘glued’ them together to become one image.
(Some of the images below are taken by a mobile phone, so the quality is not always that good, but it’s just to give you an impression of the process.)

Then some editing (yes, there is Photoshop-involved in the ‘after-process’), I add text and I’m done! (It sounds like I was done in a flash, but I don’t think I’ve ever done this much digital editing in one project before).
