De Nostalgie ‘tag’ // The Nostalgia ‘Tag’

A few weeks ago, the lovely Evelien (a.k.a. Miss Fotografille) invited me to fill in this nostalgia tag. Now if there’s one thing I like very much, it’s dwelling over my youth years and thinking of how everything was more awesome back then. So sit back and read about my kid and teenage obsessions!

Favoriete kinderfilm

Favourite kids’ movie
This was a very easy question, because my alltime favourite childhood movie was The Lion King. I think it was the first movie I ever saw in a movie theater. I went to see it with my dad and my sister and we all liked it so much that we proclaimed the year the movie came out our ‘Hakuna Matata’ year.

Favoriete TV-serie

Favourite television series
I kind of was about to say the same as Evelien did with this question, which is the cartoon series Maple Town. Boy, I loved that! But then my sister (yes, I needed some help with some of the questions and my sis has THE best memory ever) came up with ‘De geschiedenis van het land van ooit’. It’s sort of difficult to explain this in English, but it’s the ‘history’ (all fictional of course) of a theme park we loved to visit. So that’s my final answer to this question.

Favoriete boek

Favourite book
I must admit, I wasn’t much of a book person when I was a little girl. To be quite frank with you, I hated reading, except for the Donald Duck that fell into our mailbox every week. I literally devoured these magazines!

Favoriet Spice Girls liedje
Moeilijke vraag!

Favourite Spice Girls song
Difficult one! Although I did like the Spice Girls, I remember being more of a 5ive kinda girl. But when it comes to Spice Girls songs, I think I liked ‘Say you’ll be there’ the most.

Favoriet mode accessoire
Okay, daar gaan we.

Favourite fashion item
Okay here goes nothing. I wasn’t that much of a fashionista in my childood. Actually I was a skater/hardrocker/goth so I basically despised everything that had anything to do with fashion. However, I did have a period of time during which I wore loads of bracelets. The spikey, plastic barbed wire kind of bracelets. I have been looking all over my house and harddisk for an image of it and this was the one that came closest (excuse the gesture, I was very ‘rock ‘n’ roll back then):

Favoriet snoep of snacks

Favourite sweet or snack
As some of you may know, my parents got divorced when I was about six years old. My sis and I used to spend every other weekend at our dad’s place and the best part of these weekends may be the ‘sweets’ part. Every night before he went to bed, our dad would put a videotape in the taperecorder for us to watch the next morning. He would hide the packaging so the video would be a surprise to me and my sister. And (beware of the best part) he would lay a mini mars/snickers/milky-way ready for us at the table as a pre-breakfast snack. Since this is one of the best memories I have, the ‘mars-minis’ are definitely my favourite childhood-snack.

Favoriete TV-sommercial

Favourite TV-commercial
This commercial doesn’t need much explanation for my Dutch readers, ’cause I think everyone knows it. But for my non-Dutch readers: this is a commercial for a sweet called ‘rolo’ and the slogan is: ‘Think hard on what you do with your last rolo’. With that in mind, just watch the clip.

Favoriete liedje

Favourite song
Although I tought this was a rather difficult question as well (my childhood has been all about music, really) this song was the first one that popped into my head. ‘Hey Leonardo’ by Blessid Union of Souls was a song we used to play in the car with (again) my dad and my sister. We used to make endless drives through the forest of our hometown with a cassette tape in the radio. During that time, my dad was starting a music-DVD-collection and he used to watch concerts on his big screen. Whenever this song came on he always sang loudest to the part that says ‘My collection DVD’s’. Precious times, these were!

So now it’s my turn to ‘nominate’ people to fill in the Nostalgia Tag on their blog, so here goes:

Yvonne of Mouseblossom
Mariko of Applepiepieces
Annelies of Allihoppa

Alles mag, niks moet jongens!
No pressure guys, but I think it would be awesome to see your favourite childood memories!

Random roadtrip foto’s // Random roadtrip shots

I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but with last week’s post about the Neon Museum, my blogpost-series about our USA-roadtrip has come to an end. Almost. Because during our trip, I also took a lot of pictures that didn’t properly fit into the posts I’ve written before. But I just couldn’t not share them with you. So here are some random roadtrip shots. And here’s to the best roadtrip ever, which will always be one of my favourite memories.

Ik vond ergens in Washington mijn nieuwe huis.
I found my new house somewhere in Washington.

An awesome little coffeeshop in the town of Eugene.

In the same town, they had this little hummingbird cemented in the sidewalk.

We found a pile of very lazy seals on the beach.

The roof of the Monterey Aquarium (which is really worth a visit when you’re in California!).

A sign at ‘Buck Owen’s Crystal Palace’, which is a Western-kinda venue and is absolutely awesome!

We kwamen terecht in een mini-dorpje (lees: 2 panden) vlak voordat we Death Valley binnenreden. Maar wát een cadeautje!
We landed in this town (well, ‘town’: there were two buildings there) just before we entered Death Valley.

A little Las Vegas. I did not have quite enough good photo’s to make an entire post about Las Vegas, but I did want to share these, which are mostly of ‘The Freemontstreet Experience’, in downtown Vegas.

The Neon Museum

One of my absolute favourite things of all time is neon signs, as some of you may already know. I’m sad to see we don’t have many here in The Netherlands, whereas in the U.S. it’s really hard to not see them. So when I heard there was a ‘neon-sign graveyard’ in Las Vegas I just knew I had to go there. And although our time in Vegas was nice (Las Vegas is totally awesome and pretty horrible at the same time), I can honestly say that ‘The Neon Museum’ was THE highlight of our time in ‘Sin City’. ‘Cause nothing beats a whole lot of old metal, beautiful typography and loads of history.

De broche brigade // The Brooch Brigade

For those of you who have been visiting my stall at the markets I have been this past few months they may not be new. To the rest of you, let me introduce you to the newest ‘baby’ of the ‘franje family’: brooches! These brooches are made of plastic and are all finished with a glossy transparent resin for protection. They are now for sale in my Etsy shop.

Nevada State

After six (!) blogposts entirely devoted to the states John and I visited during our USA roadtrip, this seventh one, about the state of Nevada, is the final one. We weren’t in Nevada or a very long time so we didn’t see very much over there, but it was yet again so beautiful and so very different from what we’ve seen in Washington, Oregon and California. So here are all of our Nevada adventures:

Red Canyon

Red Canyon
During our drive from Death Valley to Las Vegas, we stumbled upon ‘Red Canyon’.
A particularly large rock formation which is, well, red. There was a lovely scenic route you could drive (which we did) and during which your chances were likely to spot some turtoises. Heck yeah! Of course, while we were there, all turtoises were having some secret teaparty somewehere because they were nowhere to be found. We did enjoy the scenery though.

The Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam
Seeing this dam in real life was high on John’s priority-list. Although it was a pretty okay visit (everything is so big that you feel like a very tiny tourist) it was so torrid that day that our visit wasn’t very long.

Workshop ‘kerst in een kopje’ // Workshop ‘Christmas in a cup’

I am SO excited today to announce that on december 20th, I will be hosting a workshop at the lovely shop ‘Elle Aime’ in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Together with the lovely Lisa, we will be making christmas decorations in vintage tableware. But not just with fake plastic trees and dried mosses, but with your own illustrations! Wondering what it’s going to look like? Below are some examples of things I made. If you want more information about the workshop or if you want to make a reservation, click here (Dutch only). See you december 20th!

Visiting the city of Los Angeles was one of the things I was looking forward to the most during our roadtrip. And for good reason, because it turned out to be even better than I thought. Although Portland might be at the top of my list, Los Angeles is a wonderful city too. And I must say that I thought the people would not be very nice and everyone would be extraordinarily busy with themselves. This assumption was true for some parts of the city, but in most places the people were as nice as they will ever be.

The Piñata District
Juist: niets.

The Piñata District
Visiting this part of L.A. was my priority number one (together with Disneyland. Yes, I am a big child). This is SUCH a fun part of this city and not tourist-y at all. Even better: when the receptionist of our hotel asked us what parts of the city we had visited upon checking out she was very surprised to hear that we went to the piñata district. You’re wondering what the piñata disctrict is? Well, it’s a Mexican district that is filled with party-supply wholesale companies. And what is more Mexican about a party than a piñata? Right: nothin’.

Column: Over ‘iets bijdragen’ // Recap: On ‘contributing’

Iolanthe_1

Ooit zien we elkaar weer.

Iolanthe_2

Although I consider myself one of the luckiest girls in the world to live the life I’ve always wanted, I sometimes find myself thinking I do not contribute a lot to the world. Okay, I hardly eat any meat, am seriously kind to animals, I do not leave the lights on in places I’m not present at that time, I take showers that are shorter than five minutes and I buy organic food whenever I can.
But still. I am not a surgeon. I am not a human rights activist. I am not a politician. I do not save people’s lives. I am ‘just an illustrator’. I make pretty stuff.

I sometimes struggle with the fact that I feel like I’m not doing much to make the world a better place. Part of these feelings will probably always remain, but some of these feelings have ceased to exist after our roadtrip. A very special part of our roadtrip that is. Maybe even the best part. The part that I haven’t told you about yet. But I will tell you about it now.
It all starts two years ago when I met a woman online named Myla. Myla contacted me about my work through Etsy and she told me that she was setting up an alpaca ranch where she would receive children with a serious illness. The goal of this ranch is that children can have a day without worries or pain, surrounded by alpacas. She was looking for some artwork for the ranch and seeing as llama’s and alpaca’s are such a big aspect of my illustration-career, she found me. And I am so glad she did.

Aside of the fact that I thought the idea of this ranch was the best idea ever, I loved the thought that my illustrations would put a smile upon these children’s faces. That gave me the idea that I might be a ‘doctor’ after all.
I decided to follow Myla and the developments of the ranch and I was so happy to read that this spring, she received her first ‘official’ guests at the ranch. This was such a special moment for her (and for me too, to be honest).
When John and I decided to make this roadtrip, we kindly asked Myla if she would want to meet us. The ranch is based in Washington, in a town we would basically pass through on our way. Myla was stoked to meet us in real life and so, on an evening this July, we visited the ranch.

I can honestly say that this was one of the most precious experiences I have ever had. The way Myla treats the animals (who basically listen to her like dogs would), the looks of the ranch, the experience. Our minds were blown. I don’t think I have ever met anyone with such a big heart before in my life.
Before going there I had planned to take loads of pictures and make a whole blogpost about it. But Myla is a very busy person and we only had about an hour to see her. I took my camera, but I didn’t use it. And that was sort of a milestone for me too. Because for once in years I lived in the moment. I didn’t care about taking pictures, making a nice-looking blogpost. All I cared about was being there, sharing these precious moments with Myla and ‘The Girls’, and talking like we would never talk in real life again. But something tells me we will meet again in the future.

The pictures you see in this post are made by Myla. If you would like more information about her, her ranch and her wonderful girls, click here.

California State, part 2

California_state2_0Joepie! Echt.

Yay! After showing you part one of our California adventures, today it’s time for my second post about California State, which is full of desert, cacti and…dinosaurs. Seriously.

Death Valley

Death Valley
I have told you some of the things that happened in Death Valley in last month’s recap. For those of you who did not read it: it was HOT. To say the least. The day we were there, it was about 121 degrees. Boy, I felt like I was melting at some point. But it was all very much worth it, because Death Valley is absolutely stunning. And judging by the fair amount of different sorts of landscapes, it looks far from dead to me.

Petite Route 66

Petite Route 66
Driving the whole Route 66 has been on my travel-wishlist for a long time. Although that was not the intention of this trip, we could actually drive a few miles along the 66 when traveling from Las Vegas to Palm Springs. Our travelguide promised loads of abandoned diners and broken neon signs. We found one broken-down has-been venue along the few miles we drove the route and that was about it. We were sort of diappointed about that, until we reached the famous ‘Roy’s’ gas station in the town of Amboy. This place has a rich history which is just a bunch of faded glory nowadays. But hey; the super-awesome neon sign is still there and it is soooo photogenic!

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park
We had to give it a few goes, but eventually we managed to visit Josuha Tree National Park. Why? Well, we stayed in Palm Springs for a few days, which is supposed to be a desert resort. We were very much looking forward to chilling by the pool and not doing much for a few days (except visit Joshua Tree National Park). That didn’t quite work out as planned, since throughout our whole stay in Palm Springs there were rain- and thunderstorms and flashfloods all over the place. Thank you. No pool-hanging for us. We travelled out to Josua Tree one day and once we were there (through heavy rain on the highway, which was no joke), one of the park rangers advised us to come back another day, since it might not be safe to enter the park. So instead we went bowling and we went to the cinema. Luckily, the next day the weather was good, so we headed back out to Joshua Tree National Park and I’m so glad we did. It is absolutely amazing, especially the Cholla Cactus garden. These Cacti look so cuddly when in fact they are seriously evil.

Super tof!

The Dinosaurs of Cabazon
On our way to Los Angeles (which I will be telling you about next week) we came across these HUGE dinosaurs (for those of you who have seen my post about our selfies, they might look familiar). We just had to get out of the car and take some pictures. The best part is, one of those dinosaurs actually has a shop in it’s belly, in which they sell all kinds of plastic dinosaurs. Awesome!

Mijn spulletjes verzameling // My knick knack collection

Win-win situatie!

One of my vacation traditions ever since I was a little girl is bringing home piles of ‘stuff’. Define stuff, you say? Alright, here we go: Candy wrappers, cash receipts, leaflets, sugar packets, business cards, entrance tickets, maps, feathers and beach pebbles. You name it, I collected it. The idea was always to put together a scrapbook with all these knick knacks once I would be back home. Truth is, this never actually happened, which meant that when I would clean up my room six months after we returned from vacation, the complete collection of great memories ended up in the trash can. And I was left simply wondering why I had taken the junk home in the first place.
I had to deter myself from doing the same with our U.S. roadtrip this year, which is why I decided to make a digital ‘scrapbook’ of all the things I have collected: I photographed all of my collected, bought or given ‘junk’ (almost) every day. That way I didn’t have to take everything home with me (except for my souvenirs) but I also would not forget about the things I collected. Win-win situation!
