Mijn vintage ballenautomaat // My vintage vending-machine

VM_1

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a ‘thing’ for vending machines. When I was a little girl, I could watch these things four hours, fantasizing about how life would be inside the vending machine and what it would feel like to make the roller-coaster journey out of the machine, once someone put money in it. I remember my mother always saying that the objects inside these machine were worth nothing and that they were useless, so I didn’t actually get many opportunities to buy something and see a vending machine working, but maybe that just made my obsession and the mystery these machines have about them bigger to me.

Now that I’m (sort of) grown-up, that ‘thing’ is still here. When I was looking through my ‘big book of ideas’ last month, I saw the note I made about owning a vintage vending machine of my own one day, filled with my illustrations. I came across this idea about a week before the Swan Market in december and I decided I wanted a vending machine right then, so I could take it with me to the market. I started looking for vintage machines and capsules to fill them with and I spent a week (with almost no sleep) getting the machine ready. This involved making little paper puppets and confetti. Yes. Making confetti. I went to a party supply store in order to buy confetti to fill the capsules with along with a paper puppet, but the confetti they sold was just so ugly! I couldn’t come to peace with the idea of having ugly confetti in my vending machine, so I decided to make it myself with a two-hole punch. That involved lots of time, punches and myalgia, but I’m happy with the result, and in the end that’s all that matters!

Zeefdrukken bij RAAF // Screen-printing at ‘Raaf’

1

The day before yesterday I went screen-printing at graphic workshop ‘Raaf’ in Breda. Although I attended art school in Breda for four years, I never used the graphic workshop that Breda has to offer, partly because my school had one, so I never really needed to go anywhere else to satisfy my ‘graphic-tooth’.
When I was asked to participate in an exhibition hosted by the workshop, I found it was exactly the right time to start screen-printing again. I have done so many times in art school and during my education to become a graphic designer, so I said ‘yes’ to this exhibition the minute Renie (friend and workshop-host) asked me.
The exhibition is set up to show the world what can be done in the graphic workshop, so the main goal is to show as many different things as possible. I’ve been wanting to make my own gift-wrap for a long while now, I just never really got the time to do it. For a minute I doubted whether gift-wrap was something that was ‘exhibition-worthy’, but then I thought; if the exhibition is about showing how versatile graphic arts can be, then it might just be perfect.
And so I went to the workshop this wednesday and started printing. Here are the results:

My design printed on sheets, as needed in order to put in on screen.

Seeing my design was pretty big and the sheets were printed in a smaller size, I had to put together my sheets first, which was quite the puzzle and needed to be done very precisely.

Mijn ontwerp op zeef, na het belichten.

Klaar om te drukken!
Ready to print!

And…some of the results. I printed 62 sheets of giftwrap, using different techniques (such as printing gradients and working with metallic inks) and several kinds of paper (including kraft-paper and blotting paper).

Zeven jaar en ‘de grote verrassing’ // Seven years and ‘the big surprise’

1

Oh my!

This january first, John and I celebrated our seven-year anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been seven years since we became ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’. Over these seven years, he became my best friend, and I can’t imagine ever being with someone else.

That said, John has been bugging me about having a surprise for me on our seven-year anniversary. Now don’t get me wrong, I like surprises, just not when I know they’re coming. John knows that and really enjoys my impatience, which is the main reason why he announced the surprise I guess, and he gave me hints and accidentally let slip that the surprise would be a trip.

He has been giving me hints for the past few months, all of which I did not understand. It had something to do with franje design, the Guinness book of records, our dream-trip to the States, roses and the year 1845. I came up with solutions as ‘we’re going to make so many clutches at once that we’ll be in the Guinness book of records’ or ‘Four Roses has got something to do with whiskey and whiskey is something Scottish, so we’ll be going to Scotland!’, all of which did not make any sense at all (actually, Four Roses is bourbon and is distilled in Kentucky, whoops!). The biggest hint came on Christmas eve, when John gave me a road map and a guidebook of the Pacific North-West. I didn’t dare hope or guess anymore and waited impatiently until january first.

And the date came. And the surprise was HUGE. Because my John arranged tickets for the ‘World Domination Summit’, which will take place this july in Portland, Oregon. Yes, Oregon, United States that is! Oh my Goodie! I Can’t believe we’re actually going! I could try to explain that the WDS is a conference for small entrepreneurs that takes over the whole of Portland, but I might as well just show you an aftermovie of the WDS of last year, so you can see for yourself.

Goede voornemens // New Year’s resolutions

Treasury Thursday wk 45_FB

Normally, I’m not the new year’s resolutions kind of gal, but I thought it can never hurt to think about what didn’t go too well in the past year, and what I can improve in the year ahead. So, without further ado, here are my 2014 new year’s resolutions:

1. Socialize more.
Although I like being on my own (which is good, seeing I work from home full-time), I should really see my friends more. It’s very easy to stay inside and just work, while going out for an occasional lunch or walk in the park is good for the physique as well as the mind. More of that, please!

2. Loslaten.
En me minder zorgen maken. Helaas is ‘zorgen maken’ een familiekwaal. Dus ik maak me zorgen. Over alles.

2. Let go.
And worry less. Unfortunately, worrying is a family disease. So I worry. About everything. About what to have for dinner, about what my client is going to say about the design I made for him/her, about tomorrow, about money, about what to wear, about when to do the dishes, about next year. I really want to learn to just let go of the worries about things that I myself cannot control. In fact, I just want to stop (or at least reduce) worrying in general.

3. Mijn ‘nieuwe website’ moet online.

3. Get my ‘new’ website online.
My website is in desperate need of a make over. Big time. Although the design has been finished since august, the building is taking a lot more time than I expected. I hope to be able to cross this resolution off my list in the very early stages of 2014.

4. Verhuizen.

4. Move house.
This is a resolution for the long run. John and I haven’t got solid plans yet, but we really want to move in together. We are both starting to hate moving stuff around between our places and the truth is we both just need more space. Now that I’m working full time to get my business up and running, my ‘0-bedroom-apartment’ is getting really crowded. With boxes. And paper. And postcards. And textiles. It just drives me nuts sometimes.
And, of course, I’m looking forward to having John around every single day.

5. Get the party started.

5. Get the party started.
As I stated on this blog in my ‘after graduation’ post, I plan on moving my work into a slightly different direction; parties! I guess life just got in the way these past few months and so I haven’t been doing much of this yet. I have been busy with loads of other great projects, however, so I don’t necessarily consider it a bad thing. But this year, I really want to get into this!

Het beste van 2013 // Best of 2013

Overzicht

2013 has been quite the year for me. I graduated art school, which was a huge deal, and I found myself trying (and sometimes struggling) to find my way in life as a post-grad illustrator. But LOTS more happened over the past twelve months. In this post, you will find my ‘best of 2013’.

In february I did lots of thrift-shopping. In fact; I did lots of that the whole year round.

The Fir Tree

Firtree1_DEF

It’s over, it’s over! If only I had enjoyed it while I could. It’s over, it’s over!’

Fijne kerst!

Since it’s almost Christmas, I would like to share with you one of the most beautiful Christmas stories I know.
Remember when I went to London with John this april? When we visited the Tate Modern museum-shop, I came across a book called ‘The Fir Tree’ by Hans Christian Andersen. I was drawn to the wonderful illustrations in it (I wasn’t really familiar with the stories of Andersen yet), made by the immensely talented Sanna Annukka. Since I was on a budget (I’m never not, actually), John bought me the book (thanks, darling!) and it wasn’t until I started reading it back in our hotel-room that I realised that this is not just a book. It’s a life lesson. A big one.

The story is about a fir tree, that’s still quite small and stands in the forest next to bigger trees. The little fir tree can’t wait to grow up and be cut down in order to become a Christmas tree for the people in the village. It does not enjoy the rays of sunlight, the subtle breeze or the glittering snow. It just wants to grow and leave.

Once it has become a Christmas tree, it keeps on wondering what will happen next; not enjoying the candles on it’s branches, the children dancing around it or the warmth of the home it has come to.

It’s not until it’s left discarded in the attic that it realizes how happy it has been, both in the forest and in the living room as a Christmas tree. It’s just that then it’s too late. It’s being dragged down from the attic and burned up in the summer of the next year. One of the most touching quotes in this book to me is probably this one, when the fire is lit, the tree is being chopped into pieces and it realizes; ‘It’s over, it’s over! If only I had enjoyed it while I could. It’s over, it’s over!’

And that very quote is one hell of a life-lesson to me. Yes, I plea guilty. I’m always running around, focusing on what will be next and being nostalgic after it all happened. I often just plainly forget to enjoy the moments while they actually happen. Instead, I just keep running and hurrying my life forward and I look back and say; ‘Ah, that was great wasn’t it?’. While at the moment the event actually took place, I was just thinking about all the errands I had to run, all the tasks I had on my to do list and where I would be a year from then.
So please, people; enjoy these holidays as they come and enjoy them while you can, because they will be over before you know it. I promise I will try too. Merry Christmas!
